With a displacement of 6,500 tons, a speed of 23 knots, and armed with 12x152mm deck-mounted guns, it joined the fleet in 1901. On February 9, 1904, after an unequal battle at Chemulpo with superior Japanese forces, the crew scuttled the ship without lowering the St. Andrew's flag.
