Historical Background: Laid down on November 4, 1937, at the Kure Naval Arsenal, the Yamato was famed for its unmatched features: the thickest armor, most powerful artillery, advanced fire control systems, and excellent seafaring capabilities. Despite its impressive specifications, the rise of carrier-based aviation marked the end of the battleship era. On April 7, 1945, the Yamato was sunk by 400 American aircraft in just two and a half hours.
